DEVON 36 HEATHENS 54

CRADLEY raced to their second away win of the National League season with a 54-36 triumph at Devon on Saturday afternoon.

Heathens overcame some mid-meeting setbacks to complete the match strongly and take the maximum four points from the St Boniface Arena.

All six riders present won at least one race, with Paul Starke notching 14 points despite a fall in his third ride, whilst Nathan Greaves added paid-13.

Heathens went into the lead with a 5-1 from reserves Tom Perry and Danny Phillips in Heat 2, and that race result was repeated in Heats 5 and 7 as they extended their advantage to 11 points.

Devon, though, struck back, with a tactical ride second place for Matt Bates, beaten by an impressive Matt Williamson in Heat 8, and then a 5-0 in Heat 9 when both Starke and Perry came to grief with Phillips having also fallen in the previous race.

When Bates won Heat 10 and Tim Webster overcame Max Clegg for third place the gap was down to just two points, but Heathens then turned on the style with 5-1s in four of the last five races.

Starke and Williamson set the ball rolling in Heat 11, backed up by Perry and Clegg in the next with the Demons running out of options, and after a shared Heat 13 Greaves and Phillips ensured maximum points for the Heathens with more fast gating in the penultimate race.

Boss Will Pottinger said: “I’m pleased with the result, and it’s another four league points to add to our total.

“Our lowest score was seven points, which shows what a great team effort it was without Steve Worrall.”
