DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR HEATHENS

Wednesday September 03, 2014
CRADLEY rounded off their regular National League programme in spectacular style beating the King’s Lynn Young Stars 64-29 at the Norfolk Arena.

Another remarkable team performance saw the Heathens extend their winning run to 16 meetings as well as retain the National Shield for a fourth straight season.

The meeting also served as the second leg of the competition and a staggering 133-52 aggregate victory saw the Heathens secure their first piece of silverware this season.

Steve Worrall, Paul Starke and Max Clegg all picked up confidence boosting paid maximums whilst Nathan Greaves notched paid double figures once again.

Matt Williamson scored eight paid nine, whilst fellow reserve Danny Phillips probably deserved even more than the four points he did manage.

Team Manager Will Pottinger was delighted with what he described as another fantastic result for the Heathens.

“When three of your riders go unbeaten away from home it really is a special achievement,” he said.

“We’ve probably come to expect it from Steve (Worrall) and Paul (Starke) by now, but something like that will do young Max Clegg’s confidence the world of good going into the most important part of the season.

“Nathan (Greaves) continued his fine scoring form too and was only denied a paid max himself because of a bike problem.

“The main body of the team rode brilliantly and the two reserves contributed well too.

“To win every heat away from home is something you don’t see very often at all in speedway and it’s yet another fantastic achievement.

“It was good to retain the National Shield too- especially by such a staggering aggregate margin.

“Hopefully it’s just the first bit of silverware for us this year because we’d love to add the Knockout Cup and League title to the collection again.

“But tougher days lie ahead and there’s still a lot of work to be done, but hopefully this fills the whole side with confidence going into the first leg against Coventry next week.”
