BIRMINGHAM 43 HEATHENS 47

Wednesday April 05, 2017
CRADLEY beat Birmingham in a last heat decider to clinch the West Midlands Trophy 47-43 at Perry Barr.

With the scores level going into Heat 15, Danny Ayres and club captain Tom Perry team rode superbly to secure a 5-1 maximum over Brummies duo Danyon Hume and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn.

It's the first time the Motor Market Heathens have beaten their local rivals in six attempts - much to the delight of Team Manager Will Pottinger.

"It is a bit of a relief to finally get one over the Brummies," Pottinger admitted. "They've had a brilliant against us in recent times and it's good to finally have the bragging rights back.

"It may have only been a bit of a challenge fixture, but you could still see what it meant to everyone with the celebrations after Heat 15.

"We should have really won by a few more points had luck been on our side, but we're definitely happy to keep our unbeaten start going.

"This win is great to keep the momentum going; it keeps the ball rolling and our confidence is already very high."

Last race heroes Danny Ayres and Tom Perry lead the way for the Heathens with 12 points apiece while Dan Greenwood and rejuvenated Luke Harris both chipped in with 9 each.

Joe Lawlor's tally would have been greater had he not shed a chain whilst leading heat eight while Ryan Burton's contribution proved to be crucial in the end result.
