DUDLEY 58 NEWPORT 33

Tuesday August 31, 2010
DUDLEY Heathens turned up the heat on the National League leaders with a stunning 58-33 win over Newport at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.

Skipper Lee Smart was unbeaten with a brilliant 11+1 score - but the top Heathen was 16-year-old local lad Ashley Morris who notched 11+2 including a dramatic Heat 15 win.

The former Cradley club remain third in the table with the play-offs fast approaching - and they're in a great position to challenge for top spot with a trip to the Isle of Wight coming up on Thursday.

Morris was involved in some spectacular racing, using his increasing experience of the Monmore Green track to pass riders superbly.

And fellow youngster Tom Perry, in his first season as a Speedway rider, was at his brilliant best when he went from third to first to beat Luke Priest and tactical rider Todd Kurtz early on.

Heathens boss Will Pottinger said: "This is a much better result than we expected, we rode our socks off and everyone enjoyed themselves out there.

"Newport are a fine team and we have done a good job on them. Now we need to keep this form going in the remaining weeks of the season."

HEATHENS: Ashley Morris 11+2, Lee Smart 11+1, Barrie Evans 9, Tom Perry 8+2, Jake Anderson 7, Richard Franklin 6+3, Micky Dyer 6.

NEWPORT: Kyle Newman 8, Mark Jones 7+2, Todd Kurtz 6+2, Luke Priest 5+1, Tony Atkin 5, James White-Williams 1, Tom Young 1.
