HEATHENS 38 MILDENHALL 51

Tuesday August 02, 2011
DUDLEY Heathens favourite Ashley Morris was taken to hospital with concussion as his side saw their unbeaten home record shattered by Mildenhall.

Morris was involved in a first-bend accident with the Fen Tigers’ Lewis Blackbird in Heat 9, and having fallen heavily he required lengthy attention although he was talking to medics before being taken from the circuit, and the latest news appears encouraging.

Morris’s withdrawal came on a night when the Heathens suffered, quite literally, ‘heeps’ of problems – the biggest of which was that Mildenhall’s 15-year-old sensation Cameron Heeps adapted to the track on his first visit in sensational fashion to bag a bumper 20-point haul at reserve.

With Jack Hargreaves putting his extensive Monmore experience to good use, the Fen Tigers always had control of the meeting as things went wrong for Dudley, with the returning Adam Roynon taking no fewer than three falls, and skipper Jon Armstrong being unable to win a race.

Heeps’ one defeat of the night was inflicted by Tom Perry in one of the races of the season, the Heathens man having to twice squeeze through an almost impossible gap to get the better of his opponent in Heat 12, but the Fen Tigers had the win in the bag with a race to spare.

Dudley Chairman Nigel Pearson said: “It’s a disappointing result of course, but whatever level of the sport you race at if you have a reserve who can score you 20 points from seven rides you’re going to be in with a great chance.

”Ashley’s injury didn’t help us and fingers crossed things don’t look too bad there, but congratulations to Mildenhall who deserved their win.

“I have to say the race with Tom Perry and Cameron Heeps must have been worth the admission money alone, and we now have to put this night behind us and focus on our meetings ahead because we are still very much in the play-off battle.”
